Belonging in Practice

The difference between equalityequity and belonging is more than a matter of words —
it is a vision for how real inclusion is created.

Equality gives people the same.
Equity gives people what they need.
Belonging creates the conditions where people are able to stand, participate and grow together.

When barriers are removed and people are met with respect, safety and opportunity, belonging becomes not just an ideal — but a lived, sustainable reality.

Why Fair and Inclusive Practice Matters in Social Services

In today’s diverse societies, it is essential that social services reflect and understand the children and families they serve. This is especially critical when working with children and young people, given the over-representation of children from immigrant or marginalized backgrounds in child protection systems worldwide.

Research shows that this is not only a Swedish issue:

  • In Sweden, the National Board of Health and Welfare’s 2024 register analysis highlights that children with non-European backgrounds are significantly overrepresented in LVU care.
  • Similar patterns are observed internationally, including in the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, the Netherlands and Australia, where children from marginalized communities are disproportionately involved in statutory child protection interventions.

These findings are a signal we cannot ignore. They underline the urgent need for social services to:

  • Strengthen cultural competenceand inclusive practice
  • Address systemic bias and structural barriers
  • Ensure that interventions are equitable, child-focused and legally sound

BelongAlways supports social services in meeting children, young people and their families with respect, fairness and trust, in line with the Convention on the Rights of the Child, including:

  • Article 2:Non-discrimination
  • Article 12:The child’s right to express their views and be heard

Fair and inclusive practice goes beyond ethnicity or culture — it involves understanding how multiple forms of marginalization affect children’s opportunities, safety and everyday lives. It is about building trust, creating safe encounters, and making decisions that truly last.

We envision a social service system where every child experiences belonging, respect and justice — regardless of background.
